AKC CANINE HEALTH FOUNDATION SUSTAINING PARTNERS SOUGHT

Because of the generosity of our donors we have funded over $25 million in canine health research But really, it’s not about the dollars. It’s about progress like this:

“We have reached a point where we consider Transitional Cell Carcinoma very treatable…we expect most dogs to have several months to over a year of very good life. We expect a small percentage to live multiple years, and a few lucky dogs to be cured,” says Dr. Deborah Knapp on her progress with TCC, a previously untreatable form of cancer.
“Recently published work shows remarkable similarity in canine and human osteosarcomas at the molecular level. These data will further opportunities to develop new treatments that will simultaneously improve the health and wellbeing of our dogs and our kids,” writes Dr. Jaime Modiano about his work on bone cancer.

In order to keep the momentum going, I’d like to ask you to become a Sustaining Partner of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. Sustaining Partners make monthly automatic credit card donations to the Foundation. Set up your recurring gift now.

Why should you become a Sustaining Partner?

Set it and forget it! You will never have to worry about mailing a check or forgetting to make your donation. It’s also a completely secure method of donating.

Your donation goes farther! Automatic recurring donations require less processing than mail or one-time credit card donations. When you become a Sustaining Partner, more of your donation goes to canine health research and less goes to staff time and office supplies.

You can afford to do more! Most donors can afford to give more when their donation is spread out equally throughout the year than if they make a one time annual donation.

CHF gets a reliable constant source of funding for canine health research!

It will keep you organized! You will get an email to let you know that your credit card was charged each month. But we won’t bother you with twelve pieces of mail a year to keep track of. Sustaining Partners will receive a statement each January with your total giving from the previous year to help you at tax time.

We’ll shout your name from the roof top! Okay, while we won’t being going that far, we will recognize our Sustaining Partners in the Donor Recognition

section of our website.

SOLD!

Offered recently at auction was this painting, the description read,
“Lot 319
Watercolor of Hunting Dogs & Hunter Signed Langlois

Sold For US$3,750
A stunning watercolor by renowned 19th Century British Artist J Langlois Signed on the lower right. This amazing work of art is housed in the original carved wood & gold gilt frame. The original paper backing is still intact with the label of the framer. The work is excellent as you can see & the subject of hunting dogs waiting they their turn is just awesome. The colors are so pleasing & true to life. The painting has some slight water staining that thankfully blends right into the grasses. It blends so well that I did not notice it when I bought this painting. Anyway it can be restored easily without any pain or expense. This painting is a great perfect size measuring in the frame 28 x 16 & the sight size is 25 x 13 Langlois is world renowned for his sporting & Spaniel dogs, he worked most often in oils, so watercolors by him are not very common.”

SOUND FEEDING ADVICE

Nutrition ~ Changing Dog Foods
A gradual switch over a period of four days minimizes intestinal upsets. This includes changing your dog’s type of food. The recommendation:

Day 1: Feed 75% old food and 25% new food.
Day 2: Feed 50% old food, 50% new food.
Day 3: Feed 25% old food, 75% new food.
Day 4: Feed 100% new food.

THINGS WE DON’T ALWAYS REALIZE

German officials announced new legislation to increase security in the food chain and ensure an early warning system, after the discovery of the industrial fat dioxin in animal feed in January. The new feed production rules focus on food security and “Boosting surveillance is a key part of this,” said Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner. (from Watt Feed eNews 2-2-11)
Dioxin contamination occurred, at least one country is looking to avoid a repeat!

I attended a horse seminar the other night> The nutrition expert was touting their company’s vitamin B supplementation – they launched a vitamin B supplement because their studies had shown this was the major and most common deficiency in horse diets. The general consensus had been that because vitamin B group was added most commercially sold horse foods this would not be so, but research had shown otherwise. In effect the analysis on the product label can only be ‘true’ at the time the product is tested, which more than likely is at the time of manufacture or packaging. But due to the increased storage life and transporting, MOST of the vitamin B group is actually oxidized (becomes effective) BEFORE the owner was opening the pack and feeds the product to the horse. How true is this of any commercially made and analyzed product you feed your dog?

By the way, in some circumstances in Australia, manufacturers can do a ‘tally’ for a nutritional analysis, they just tote up the ingredients and get their analysis – no actual chemical analysis is done on the product, despite processing the ingredients (so potentially altering or ‘destroying’ them). The analysis is a guide only, and chemically speaking it may be a poor guide. Does this happen in your country?
