A HAPPY NEW BEGINNING FOR CHUMLEY by Tamara Georgick
I’ve always loved dogs and have had many foster and rescue dogs, however, Chumley is the first purebred dog I have owned. I’ve admired Clumbers from afar because there were none in rescue and I’ve always tried to help the dogs that might otherwise be passed over. – this story is about one of the Hungarian pups that ended up in a puppy mill in the USA
AUSTRALIAN CLUMBER SHOWS 2007 by Clumber Spaniel League Victoria
This year the club hosted two championship shows and one open show – the three shows held over two days one `long’ weekend in July. For the two championship shows we were so very lucky to be able to appoint Maureen and Tony Taylor of Maursett Clumbers, UK to adjudicate at, while the Open Show was judged by hound specialist and Cavalier exhibitor Meredith Clegg. Again these were the only Clumber specialities in Australia for the year.
SEDGEHURST SPECIAL by Patricia Huskins
We arrived at Debbie and John’s in the late afternoon and after a warm welcome settled into Leys Cottage, a fantastically well-equipped and spacious cottage with views to die for. We were kindly invited to join John, Debbie and their friends, John and Mandy Gibson, for dinner that evening at the local pub.
THE FIVE CS THAT MAKE EACH AND EVERY DOG – CONFORMATION by Barbara Irving BVSc
All conformation is based on the rigid skeleton. This skeleton is composed of the same bones on each and every dog. The variations in shape and size of the various bones gives rise to the difference in appearance of each and every dog
THE TRUTH ABOUT DROOLING DOGS by Moira Simmonds
When I asked if drooling was inherited on the Clumber Spaniel list little did I know the can of worms it would open. After a very warm and almost hot discussion about Clumbers drooling, do they or don’t they, I thought to do some in depth investigation? Then how honest are we who say, “My Clumber doesn’t drool!
WHY ALL THE TEARS MY FRIEND? by Dr Boyd Harrell
Tears are necessary to keep the cornea moist and to act as a windshield washer fluid every time the eyelids close or blink. Tears are produced from two glands. The main tear or lacrimal gland sits above the eye, near the point where the lining of the eyelid meets with the eye. This glad secretes approximately seventy percent of total tear production. The second smaller gland rests on the inner side of the third eyelid also known as the haw and as the nicitans or nictitating membrane. This membrane serves to protect the eye. The dog is able to retract the eye into the socket and the third eyelid comes across and totally covers the eye during an insult and helps to lubricate the eye in non-threatening times

THE GREAT HOUSES OF THE DUKERIES HOME OF THE CLUMBER SPANIEL by the Late Rae Furness
The Clumber Spaniels original home was the Dukeries area of Nottinghamshire. This is a lovely stretch of country taking in the great houses of the area, Worksop Manor, Welbeck Abbey, Clumber Park, Thoresby Hall and Osberton Manor. Just flanking these we have Sandbeck House and Serlby Hall all housing Clumber spaniels in their day and most of them in Sherwood Forest the famous Robin Hood Country.
CLUMBER SPANIEL CLUB OF HOLLAND SHOW
Overall the standard of Clumbers in Holland is good. I was most impressed by some of the baby puppies in particular the winners of both dog and bitch classes and I note they are from the same litter. The bitch In Fundo Maris Bobos Bella Bettie was such a confident young lady far in excess of her age and should have a really promising future. As she was under six months she could not compete for best puppy but will no doubt go on to win in future
VERSATILITY WITH BEAUTY = MAGGIE! by Janice Scott
This special bitch, named Maggie, came into my life as a nine week old puppy. She was bred by Robert and Jane Bonnaccorso, long time breeders of Clumber Spaniels. She was the product of frozen semen from a dog, CH Companionways Clipper, who had died many years ago
WESTMINSTER 2007 by Anita Roberts
The Westminster Show is held over two days, the Clumbers, this year, being on the second day. As I said earlier, this show is the equivalent to our Crufts, so the size of it came as quite a shock. Both the number of spectators and dogs are limited, tickets being sold out long before the show. The number of dogs is limited to approximately 2,500 (a bit different from our 26,000). The show covers 7 small rings (Crufts has 31 large rings). Only Champion dogs may enter. The top dogs from each breed are invited to be shown; the rest are allocated on a first come basis until the permitted number of dogs has been fulfilled. This was achieved in just 10 minutes after opening for the 2007 entries. Im told that despite this rather haphazard way of entering, a fairly good representation of all the breeds is achieved

FIRST CLUMBER MX & MXJ FROM START TO FINISH by as told by Judy Hiller, her breeder & best buddy
In 2006 my goal was to earn at least one MACH point (seconds under course time are called MACH points). She earned three MXJ legs during the qualifying period for the First AKC Agility Invitational, but it wasnt until her third leg that she managed to be MORE than a second under course time. Goal achieved: she would be invited to this event with ONE MACH point to her name

CANINE REPRODUCTION AND WHELPING by Moira Simmonds
She explained the use of Glycoflex original formula. It was developed to help joint function and to promote connective tissue health. They soon (Meaning the reproductive world) discovered this product had a great side effect and that was increased sperm production in the older male (even in younger males). Now to those in the know it is a product to help in reproduction and not just for joints
PROPOSAL FOR THE CLUMBER CLUBS AND INTERESTED CLUMBER BREEDERS by Jan E Irving
For year after year, most breeders blithely bred two Clumbers together, and the science now shows, that at least in some parts of the world, and the population bearing about 25% carriers, a global epidemic of PDP1def in Clumbers was imminent. The odds of Russian roulette (1 in 6) were better! (Compared to 1 in 4!
PETER by Theresa Coles
Back in 1994,I attended South Africas premier dog showin Johannesburg, and saw my first Clumber, who, as luck would have it, was Petes father. I remember causing my partner some embarrassment by falling onto my knees and hugging the dog, shedding the odd tearinto his glossy coat.
THE KIWI CLUMBERIS A DUTCH CHAMPION by Daniel Mans
On the 15th of March 2004 in a very small town in New Zealand a litter of Clumber Spaniels was born. Two dogs and four bitches. One of the two dogs did not know what was going to happen to him.
THE FIVE CSTHAT MAKE EACH AND EVERY DOG PART 1 OF LOTS by Barbara Irving BVSc

YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE HEART by Ron Hevener
It wouldn’t be easy. From a bumbling puppy, struggling to stand on his own, he would make it through all the trials facing a young dog in this world. He would untangle his legs, raise his head high and howl at the moon. He would sing to the gods and laugh at the clouds and race the wind. He would be what he was — mind, body and soul. He would be a dog – nothing more, nothing less: A dog chasing the mist of destiny.
CARING FOR YOUR SENIOR DOG by Dr. Debra Primovic
Top 10 Tips To Help Your Arthritic Dog Dog arthritis is one of the most common diseases that affect canines, especially large breed dogs (60-90 lbs). Just as human arthritis, dog arthritis tends to get worse with age.
HOMEOPATHY by Anita Roberts
When treating homoeopathically you should give sufficient doses of the chosen remedy to evoke a response. When you notice an improvement increase the time interval between doses. Continue taking the medicine while the symptoms improve, until they either settle at a steady level or disappear altogether, at which point stop taking the medicine. Additional doses will be of little value unless the condition returns.
WORLD DOG SHOW ADVENTURE by Victoria Moira Simmonds
The invitation had been issued the year before. The Bohemia litter bred by Ira Sarlin of Finland, had been outstanding in the ring. All of the owners had been exchanging pictures of puppies and their achievements for over a year. Then Ira had simply sent a message to all of us saying “Why don’t we all meet in Poland at the World Show in Poznan to be held in November 2006?” It had been a simple invitation but one I thought I could only dream about. I lived the furthest away. My husband’s health had been very tenuous for nearly the past 2 years and it was more than I could even contemplate. I could not leave him unless he became stable. It was however something I did take out and dream over when I had a moment.
THE TRAGIC LOSS OF BLOODLINES AND MENTORING IN AMERICA by Carol D. Hawke
These tremulous topics are subjects I have been carefully contemplating for better than a decade after we first began to hear rumours from British friends about the unsettling disappearance of renowned bloodlines and having personally witnessed the decline of individual mentoring here in America. The disconcerted whispers have evolved into various public outcries as numbers of longtime breeders, handlers and judges worldwide have united in mutual concern.

STAND UP FOR THE CLUMBER by Jan E Irving
Does it matter? Well if these points are wrong or inappropriate, how can the website owners ask me to believe in what they claim to represent or in any of the information they publish. Not only do they do our breed a horrendous injustice they, at the same time, leave their credence and worth in tatters.
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR ADVERTISEMENT AND PHOTOGRAPHIC TIPS PART 3 OF 3 by Deirdre Ashdown and Mike Foster
Digital alteration – Never stretch or compress a photo to fit the space you wish it to occupy, not even by a small percentage. It is always noticeable and it always looks terrible. Do remove “red-eye” or the tip of a slightly protruding tongue if you can use Photoshop or Illustrator, or but do it carefully so that the alteration is not obvious. If you are not good at this get some-one to do it for you. You can also hand-touch a photographic print but it should be done by an artist, who will use specialist tools – not by you, using a felt tip or a biro to ink in “red-eye”.

RABBITS IN 2005 by Jackie Crawford
We have been wanting to join the annual rabbit shooting days for the past few years, this year with dogs ready to work, nothing in season and actually being in the Country we booked up a B&B and arranged for the rest of the dogs to be looked after ( there is a benefit of having teenage children!) and then faced the long trek up the motorway to Scotland.
SHOW RING SECRETS by www.showringsecrets.com
Viewed from above it is VERY hard to know what the feet are doing, asking for the audience’s comments is misleading (remember they are outside the ring, the judge is inside & stands a lot closer), getting someone else to gait the dog hardly helps, free exercise or getting someone to video him over various speeds is the most enlightening.

WELKIN by Victoria Moira Simmonds
My office is on the bottom floor, the window above ground. I know a shadow will soon cross my key board and if I look up Welkin (WhiteHawk Nonsuch Welkin Lass) will be sitting against the outside window. If I ignore her she will scratch the window itself. Already the window looks covered in brown paint which is dried mud from when spring arrived. Welkin wants me to go upstairs and let her in and feed everyone. My gang are such creatures of habit

AUSSIE SHOWS 2006 by Clumber Spaniel League Victoria

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR ADVERTISEMENT AND PHOTOGRAPHIC TIPS PART 2 OF 3 by Deirdre Ashdown & Mike Foster
When it comes to the major national and international journals/annuals you will be paying what seems a lot of money for an advertisement but you have to remember that the publication will receive a very large readership. Whether it is better that your ad. be seen by 5,000 general dog breeders and exhibitors, as against possibly 50 Clumber breeders/exhibitors, is something only you can decide.

VERY SPECIAL CLUMBERS by Jan E Irving
“The other one was a bitch I owned who was used by the three local veterinary practises in my area as a blood donor. She would willingly sit and have the blood removed from her neck without any hesitation. The funny thing was she seemed to know she was helping and she was not at all put off. She would pull on her lead to get in to the surgery with her tail wagging. Mind you it might have been something to do with the treats and fuss the staff made of her!!

EMPTY WALLETS! by Jackie Crawford
A few years ago our neighbours popped in and asked us if we could look at a print they had, they thought it was a Clumber. ( They had taken over looking after their mother’s house so I presume it was her’s) Anyway – we looked and it was the Maude Earl of two Clumber heads (1902 I think) Anyway it was really spotty with mould so not in very good condition. I said I would love to have it…… About that time we saw one in good condition at Crufts for œ103

Modern automatic cameras are so simple to use that provided you follow the instructions and familiarise yourself with the camera and its handbook before embarking on the first important “shoot”, you will not be disappointed with the results – though practise, of course, makes perfect. Don’t just read it, either – take a roll of film, the subject of which should be entirely unimportant
SHAME by Andrea V‚rtesi
There is a woman in Hungary who has two Clumber bitches (one of them without a pedigree) and a male. She had two litters in 2004 which she sold to commercial traders and the puppies were auctioned in Southwest Auction Service, Oklahoma, USA. The first set of puppies were bought from the auction by Clumber lovers and placed into good homes. But all others went to puppy mills. I have reported the breeder to the Hungarian Kennel Club but they did nothing about this breeder. You can imagine my surprise when the woman called me on the 18th of January. She told me that she had two litters and if I helped her to find buyers for the puppies then she would not sell them to traders. She wanted to sell the 5 weeks old puppies for 400 Euro and the 8 months old puppies for 600 Euro

Christine Bridgwater – Scherzando – UK “I’d not breed from any with a bad temperament. Bad conformation. Lack of enthusiasm for life! THE WRY SIDE OF THE CLUMBER by Jan E Irving
I am particularly grateful to the few people on who did respond to my recent request for any information anyone had, full details of the responses are of course archived on that site for members. It seems the incidence of wry bites within Clumbers is extremely low, much lower than would indicate (at this stage) a genetic issue. One case was reported of a later age development,
THE WILLIAM MANSELL FUND by Bryant Freeman
The earliest known written report appeared in the Sporting Magazine of April 1807 and is quite explicit: ” . . . William Mansell, during a uniform attention to the duties of his office (near thirty years), has, above other things, studied to increase, unmixed, this peculiar race of Flushers. The Duke’s (or Mansell’s) breed is still held in higher estimation than any other of the Spaniel kind . . .” As Jan Irving points out, the Mansells were for several generations the gamekeepers or kennel masters at Clumber Park as well as on several surrounding ducal estates, and William as a first name appears over several generations, but all evidence points to the William Mansell of 1746-1806 as the one referred to here.

THOUGHTS ON JUDGING CLUMBER SPANIELS by Bill Ironside
Judging is a very serious business and I would advise anyone taking up these appointments to really work at. Learn the standard, study gait and movement, learn what balance means and, as rider, to all this, learn to read when a dog is comfortable and at ease.

AGILITY WITH CLUMBERS by Judy Hiller

ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF CLUMBER by John Woodlief
A fabulous account of John and Naiza’s entry to the world of Clumbers and showing … Now, Clumbers make some incredibly unique sounds, no other breed could possibly imitate, as I said, they are not dogs, they are Clumbers. The woo woo, the snorts, and the funky snoring to mention a few, but what Naiza and I heard next coming out of these two as they rumbled was almost indescribable. We had never heard such strange sounds, but close, the best that I could would be a sea lion battling with a grizzly bear, then the Tasmanian devil shows up with a humpback whale thrown in for good measure. This epic battle …
CLUMBERS WITH A VERY SPECIAL JOB by Susan Gariepy
My favourite evenings are when we are able to go to the wards and visit the children who are not able to come to the gym. I always have trouble with Tess because, once she gets on a chair beside a child’s bed, she thinks she should be on the bed curled up with the child. It is so heartwarming to see the smiles, to hear them speak, to hear the care givers day she or he hasn’t smiled for days or spoken a word. These gorgeous big white “teddy bears” bring such joy to these very special children.

NOSEWORK FOR YOUR CLUMBER by Ed Presnall
He sees the harness and the line and it starts. Like a white blur he scurries to the door. Impatient he rushes back to you, makes a mad dash through the house and bounces at the door, a plume of white fur slowly settling in the still air. You clip on his lead and open the door. Like an out-of-control freight train he drags you down the steps, doing loops around you, binding your appendages together with his lead. Stumbling and laughing you open the van and he flies into the crate. He knows.

PDH – YOU DO NEED TO SCREEN ALL YOUR BREEDING CLUMBERS! by Jan E Irving
PDH stands for Pyruvate Dehyrogenase Deficiency and relates to the absence of a crucial enzyme in one of the biochemical pathways which occurs in all cells. As an observer you will witness a dog with various expressions, but most often an owner will complain of the pup’s inability to walk comfortably without sitting for more than a hundred paces or so.
HOMES & RE-HOMING by Sue Thomas
As you can see Rescue, Showing and Judging took over my life, and I achieved my ambition in 1981 of owning my first Clumber Spaniel (wh had been rescued). Sadly owing to the trauma of his early life we only had him for a few months but I hope we made the end of his life happy. I then bought my first Clumber puppy in 1982, within a very short time I was invited to become a member of the club committee.

CLUMBERS IN THE MEDIA by Jan E Irving
It may be a while since I have put a In the Media column together, but it hasn’t been for lack of material coming to my attention! So let’s get into it, you’ll find media references from all sorts of eras and sources this time, a credit to the greatness of the Clumber breed. I have been rather surprised by the modern media attention, but generally this type of exposure would have escaped my attention, but for the wonders of the internet, and the Google alert service.
MICHAEL J GILHAM by Anita Roberts
Mick Gilham was born in Southend-on-sea, one of three boys and one sister. He enlisted with the Royal Navy, when old enough and served a full term, i.e. 26 years. At home, his first love was his dogs, but he did like to keep a keen eye on Southend’s football team and always enjoyed a quiet afternoon watching cricket on TV. In his not so quiet moments he enjoyed listening to classical music, which he liked to play very loudly!
GREENHORN TRACKING OR TRACKING FOR THE TRUE “DUMMY” by Moira Simmonds
But what would I do? Only Welkin was partially obedient and Gregory would go as far as to take all my words into consideration and then just did his own thing. I would like to have hunted but had no one to work with.

REWARDS IN TRAINING by Kim Hazelet
We all strive towards a common goal of receiving a reward for accomplishments. An employee strives to do their best to obtain a raise in pay. A child works hard in school for good grades that will please their parents. Training dogs is no different. Dogs need reinforcement for good behaviour. And with our beloved Clumbers, who ask, “What’s in it for me?” the reward must be significant

WHATEVER IT TAKES by Ron Hevener
Many animal lovers have lost their pets in heart-wrenching ways. When it’s happening right in front of your eyes, there isn’t anything you wouldn’t do, anything you wouldn’t pay. Save my pet! Save this pet I love! But at what price? Is it wise for us to say, yes – save my pet at any cost? Or is that a callous question? Is it fair for veterinarians to charge us many thousands of dollars to save dying pets? Or is that also a callous question?

WHAT IS A `GOOD’ CLUMBER? by Norma Jean Simpson
I have many of them here; I suppose you do, too. All sorts – big and cushy, small and light, couch potatoes and one whirling dervish. Coats dragging the ground and some clipped short. Freckles, no freckles, and everything in between. Both colours. What is that indescribable `good’ quality that makes our clumbers the light of our lives? Wanting expert opinions, I posted this request to the lists and was quite surprised by the responses.
THE “CLUMBERS” BODY WEIGHT HEALTH SCHEME
Weight, condition, and health will all affect the quality of life and even the longevity of life for your Clumber Spaniel. The international magazine “Clumbers” is proud to provide this visual guide to help you assess your own Clumber’s body weight – scales are handy, but do not necessarily tell you the truth about body weight and condition.
A CLOSE CALL FOR WINNIE BEAR by Susan Teniswood
She had a season in February, then turned around and had another season less than three months later. The season appeared to be progressing normally, but stopped very suddenly after two weeks. We didn’t think much of it, hoping that perhaps it hadn’t been a true season.
CAN YOU IMPROVE HIND ACTION? by The late Tom Horner
Anyone who judges a number of breeds will know how widespread is this problem in all kinds of breeds from the largest to the smallest, though it is less often found in the short-legged who tend more often to move wide rather than close behind.
CLUMBER CLUSTERS by Moira Simmonds
When they arrived I unpacked them and was not terrible sure what to do with them. Some were stamps and others were cigarette cards. I framed them nicely and they hung in my office. You know how you can look at something so often that it ceases to register. There they were for about 3 years

BREED SPECIFIC BREEDING STRATEGIES by Clumber Spaniel Klubben (Sweden)
The Swedish Kennel Club is working to achieve a good breeding quality for all breeds in Sweden. All dogs are registered, and there are health programs where different types of health status , for example hips, eyes etc are registered. Dogs with serious hereditary defects are not allowed to be used for breeding. All registrations are published via the internet In 2002 the Swedish Kennel Club’s council decided that all breed clubs in Sweden should write their own breed specific breeding strategies, to be know as RAS. They have to be finished before 2005. The Clumber Spaniel Klubben has worked on ours

COUNTERSURFING by Kim Hazelet
Until recently, I had only heard about countersurfing in Clumbers from other owners. The tales they told how their sneaky dogs scoped out all tabletops while their backs were turned was amazing. These Clumbers had the knowledge and agility to reward themselves with any food item that was left above unattended. Owners were shocked to find only crumbs left. I have never had a countersurfing Clumber until recently

THE ROAD TO CRUFTS by Kimberley Daboo
To find ourselves in the ancestral home of the breed, at the largest dog show in the world, in 2004 was a dream come true and quite a leap from that puppy match! I had to pinch myself often during the months leading up to Crufts. I didn’t believe it could possibly be happening to Penguin or to me

Hot extra strength, Trail Coffee, that snapped one’s eyes open with great immediacy was a choice. You had to be tolerant and accustomed to it to truly enjoy it. I always enjoyed it. For the uninitiated, like my British husband, there was the regular stuf

A superb day – where the Keeper, his Guns and ground were absolutely top class. The winner is quite a veteran at 9 years old and in his first Trial! He took the Trophy and the Sash!
VERTICAL PEDIGREES by Anita Roberts
Pedigrees may also be constructed vertically. A vertical pedigree shows many more first and second generation relatives than the traditional horizontal pedigree. Vertical pedigrees make best use of the principle that full siblings are, on average, equally genetically similar to each other as they are to each of their parents. All of the littermates taken as a group, represent various combinations of their parents’ genes, and are good indicators of the `range of possibilities’ that are likely to be passed on from any one of them

NO MORE COLLARS! by Sarah Sobry
I always keep collars on my dogs. It makes it easier to grab them, throw a leash on them when we are off to dog class and I know they always have ID on them should they jump the fence and get lost. Our fence in the front yard is only three feet high, a regulation height where I live, and our dogs, a Border Collie named Jenny (2 1/2 years old) and a Belgian Tervuren named Tasha (8 months old), are tall enough to jump the fence if they so choose.

HEARTS by Anita Roberts
The onset of heart disease in dogs is usually gradual and not likely to give rise to sudden death. The conditions leading to heart failure may develop slowly and in some cases have been present from birth. More often than not there are plenty of warnings to indicate that something is wrong, so we usually get plenty of time to do something about it.
